Romarco Commences Phase Two Drilling at Hog Ranch Project
May 11, 2004
ROMARCO MINERALS INC. ("TSXV: R" - the "Company") is pleased to announce that it has begun the Phase II drilling program at its Hog Ranch Project located in Washoe County, Nevada. The Phase I program, as previously reported, discovered both high grade gold mineralization that may support underground mining, and a broad zone of significant grade mineralization that is well within open pit mining depths. The best intercepts from Phase 1 were penetrated in drill hole HR-04-3, and consisted of 70 feet (21.3 m) interval averaging 0.152 oz/ton gold (5.23 g/t) that begins approximately 225 feet (69 m) below the surface. Within this 70 foot interval were two 5 foot (1.5m) high grade intervals assaying 0.837 oz/ton gold (28.7 g/t) and 0.502 oz/ton gold (17.2 g/t), respectively. The Phase II program includes drill holes that are designed to extend the mineralization penetrated in HR-04-3, and also holes that will begin testing other high priority targets on the property.
Phase II Drill Targets
The planned drilling program will consist of approximately 4500 feet (1372m) of diamond core drilling in six holes. Dynatec Drilling Inc. has been contracted to conduct the drilling. The program will be supervised by William Walker, Romarco's consulting geologist for Hog Ranch, and Robert Hatch, Romarco's U.S. Exploration Manager.
Of the six planned drill holes, three are to be drilled around HR-04-3, which is situated about midway between the previously-mined Geib and Krista Pits. Two of the holes will attempt to extend the mineralization found in HR-04-3 along strike, and one hole will test for an extension of the mineralization down dip One of Romarco's primary target areas has always been the Krista Pit, which was the largest deposit mined by Western Hog Ranch Company. Two holes will be drilled under the north and south ends, respectively, of the Krista Pit to test for feeder structures in those areas. In the Geib pit area, one hole will be drilled to test a target below and adjacent to the pit at an interpreted structural intersection. These targets in both the Krista and Geib Pit areas were not drilled during the first phase due to excessively muddy conditions at that time. Numerous additional target areas exist at Hog Ranch, and Romarco plans on drill testing them during future drilling programs.
Hog Ranch Geology
Geologically, Hog Ranch is a large volcanic-hosted gold/silver district where local zones of high-grade gold, comprised of banded quartz-adularia veins containing free gold, were found during the exploration for, and mining of, generally lower grade, near-surface disseminated and breccia ore bodies. Romarco believes that these local high-grade veins indicate the potential for bonanza quartz-adularia veins occurring at greater depth than the previously mined deposits. It is interpreted that such veins would be the hydrothermal "feeders" to the near-surface gold deposits, and would potentially constitute underground minable bonanza deposits. Due to the shallow depth of the significant grade gold mineralization found in HR 04-3, Romarco will now also be addressing the potential for additional open pittable deposits at Hog Ranch.
Romarco has the option to earn a 60% interest (65% under certain conditions) in the Hog Ranch Project from Seabridge Gold Inc. by spending US$2.5 million in exploration and project holding costs, and issuing to Seabridge a total of 1.5 million shares of Romarco prior to December 31, 2007. Romarco will be the operator of the project during the term of the Agreement.
Romarco's Qualified Person and U.S Exploration Manager, Mr. Robert M. Hatch, has reviewed and approved this press release.
